Springboks going Green with Cleaner ClimateAs primary sponsor of the Castle South Africa 2009 Lions Series, South African Breweries (SAB) have extended their environmental support to a unique new project, ‘Greening the Boks’, which aims to offset the carbon emissions generated by the World Champion Springbok team’s transport and accommodation during this tour. SAB and SA Rugby have enlisted global carbon solutions company - Cleaner Climate to calculate and offset the emissions generated from the Boks tour. Rob Fleming, SAB Sponsorship Manager, says “This is the first national sports team in South Africa to support climate change mitigation, and we urge corporate companies involved in sports sponsorships to demonstrate their dedication to protecting the environment.” SA Rugby itself, has started on its own sustainability path by drafting a Climate Change Strategy, and has recently conducted a carbon footprint assessment of its Cape Town Head Office. The Boks too will be encouraged to adopt a greener lifestyle and show fans how simple energy saving changes to their behaviour and their homes can make significant improvements to the environment. The Springbok team and management took time off from a busy training schedule to learn about the threat of climate change and South Africa’s vulnerability to its effects. Bok players hope to use their status to encourage supporters and the general public to become more aware of this important issue. |
