Green Waves - The Billabong Pro Green Initiatives

Greening initiatives at this year’s Billabong JBay pro will assist in making the Jeffreys Bay tourism sector and community more sustainable.

A Green Guide for all the local accommodation establishments will be produced in conjunction with JBay Tourism Association. The guide will contain greening suggestions to help B&B’s and letting agents reduce their energy use and carbon footprint.

Cleaner Climate has worked with Billabong and event organisers to implement specific initiatives which include:

  • using renewable energy  where possible to supplement heat and power requirements
  • creating a Green Guide for local accommodation providers (B&B's and Letting Agents) to assist them in reducing their energy use and carbon footprint
  • wetsuit recycling program offering vouchers for used wetsuits handed in at event
  • creating a recycling program for event waste
  • providing biodegradable food and beverage containers
  • printing and posters on recycled paper with soya based inks
  • ensuring that all equipment in the judging tower is turned off at the end of each day and not left on standby
  • providing competitors and officials with refillable drinking bottles and re-usable beverage mugs to avoid waste
  • supplying paper bags instead of plastic at the event shop
